BUSINESS PROGRAMME
The Business Investment Programme allows business owners to obtain British status by doing little more than invest £200,000 into, and be actively involved with, a U.K. firm. As with other work-permit schemes, this programme generates a one-year work-permit, renewable for an additional three years if the investor achieves the requirements attached to this work-permit.
Eligibility for issuance, and continuance, of a business investor work-permit
requires one to:
- invest £200,000 into a U.K. business,
- maintain controlling interest in that business,
- be personally liable for at least £200,000 of the investment,
- create employment for at least two “settled residents” and
- have sufficient additional funds to avoid having to rely on public assistance to support oneself and one’s dependants.

Business migrants are free to invest into, and operate, any type of lawful business and are limited to working for that business. An accompanying spouse, however, is free to work anywhere, but the spouse’s income will not be considered in ascertaining whether the principle work-permit-holder’s income is sufficient income to support the family.
The more detailed and professional the mandatory business plan, the higher the investment proposed, the greater the relevant experience possessed and the higher the reserve capital, the greater the likelihood that a work-permit will be issued and extended to the fifth year when its bearer may be granted “indefinite leave to remain”; i.e., permanent residence.
