Britain extends to retired persons “of independent means” the opportunity to reside, but not work, in Britain for four years, after which “indefinite leave to remain”, leading one year later to British citizenship, may be obtained. In order to qualify for “entry clearance” in this capacity, one must:
- be at least age 60,
- have an annual income of at least £25,000,
- be self-supporting without recourse to British employment or public assistance,
- demonstrate a close connection to the United Kingdom.
Having a “close connection” to the U.K. would include:
- settled residents who are one’s parent, sibling or child,
- extensive, fairly recent residence in Britain or
- lengthy periods of study in the United Kingdom.
