RETIREMENT PROGRAMME

Britain extends to retired persons “of independent means” the opportunity to reside, but not work, in Britain for four years, after which “indefinite leave to remain”, leading one year later to British citizenship, may be obtained. In order to qualify for “entry clearance” in this capacity, one must:

  • be at least age 60,

  • have an annual income of at least £25,000,

  • be self-supporting without recourse to British employment or public assistance,

  • demonstrate a close connection to the United Kingdom.

Having a “close connection” to the U.K. would include:

  • settled residents who are one’s parent, sibling or child,

  • extensive, fairly recent residence in Britain or

  • lengthy periods of study in the United Kingdom.

Retired persons of independent means are permitted to be accompanied by their spouse, or partner of two years standing, and their children under age 18. Although the retired person is not permitted to work in Britain, dependants may, but their income will not be taken into account in ascertaining whether the retired person and dependants are self-supporting.
